Regnum Sinense

About

Regnum Sinense

Regnum Sinense is the companion to the historical atlases of Atrium Concordiae. Every map the studio animates is drawn from the written record, and this site is where that record is laid open: year by year, the passages the maps are built on, in the original Chinese and in English translation, set side by side paragraph for paragraph, with notes on the terms, the persons and the places they name.

The reading begins in 周赧王五十九年 (256 BC), the year Qin extinguished Western Zhou, and continues forward through the Qin unification and beyond, keeping pace with the videos.

Translations are made and checked one bracket at a time against a shared glossary, so that a term is rendered the same way wherever it occurs. Names are given in pinyin with the Chinese beside them; dates are given by regnal year and converted from the sexagenary cycle to the day of the month.

Atrium Concordiae 宣和府

Atrium Concordiae is a cartography studio. Its work takes the form of animated historical atlases of China and videomaps.

Regnum Sinense is edited by Kou Shiyou, head of the studio. New years are added as the videos they accompany are released.

Contributors

无骨者伊瓦尔 (Ivar the Boneless) is a collaborator on Regnum Sinense: the commentary and analyses that accompany each year's sources are his. He has also contributed to other historical works, among them Histodome.
